Facing the challenges of caring for those living with HIV/AIDS is an ever changing situation.  It is important to have the most current information available while still addressing the issues that remain constant.  The conference agenda will provide current and relevant information while exploring the constants that remain an on-going challenge to those working and living in the HIV/AIDS world.
On day one, you will be welcomed by our local State Health Department’s office of HIV, STD’s and Hepatitis C.  The opening plenary will explore the root causes - behaviors and social determinants - that are shared by these disease groups.  We will address:

  • The transition from the early days of the quilt to the present day of treating HIV/AIDS as a chronic condition and focusing on issues of metabolic change and aging
  • Get vitalized with a presentation on the prevention challenges and behavioral patterns that contribute to the rising number of those infected
  • Recognize the signs of depression and unique issues when combined with a positive status.  What is the responsibility of the provider and care giver to identify and become a resource for care?
  • In breakout sessions, attendees will have the option of :
    • Studying the incidence and pattern of coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) as a regional HIV/AIDS opportunistic infection
    • Explore the integration of services with linking HIV,  HCV and STD in one department and as recommended by the CDC
    • Sensitize for diversity with the LGBT community and understand their relationship with the HIV/AIDS community

On day two of the conference there will be a variety of topics much like a medical mixed grill.  The specific areas of discussion are ones requested and of great concern.  We will focus on:

  • The impact of HIV/AIDS on women, from the onset of the epidemic to present numbers of women infected;  special challenges of getting women to care will be discussed
  • The neuropsychiatric aspects of HIV will be explored as they specifically relate to addictive behaviors
  • The physiology of the virus will be examined, identifying properties unique to the retroviral family and affecting the immune system
  • There will be an opportunity to question the experts in a one-hour open microphone session
  • Case Management challenges will be targeted and discussed
  • How Naturopathic medicine acts upon the immune system to reconstitute and improve overall health and longevity of one living with HIV/AIDS will be considered
  • The pharmacokinetics of HIV medication will be explained and reviewed from absorption to metabolism and finally elimination from the body
  • Pregnancy and the HIV positive women; new possibilities are examined.

To complete your conference experience, Dr. Andy Myers will address the need to advocate for the homeless and disenfranchised, as they are truly the lost community of the HIV world.
